Contrary to popular opinion, it was not "some safety engineer" a couple of
years ago who developed the theory that pedal placemment led to unintended
acceleration in various Audi's: it was Road & Track magazine, in an
article maybe 15 (?) years ago, at the height of the Audi hysteria.
They began by testing an Audi for stopping distance from, I beleive 60MPH
or 70 MPH. Then they repeated the same test, BUT WITH RIGHT FOOT FIRMLY
PLANTED on the accelerator pedal, braking with the left foot. The second
test took I believe one (1.0) or two feet farther to stop. Thus proving
that the brakes could overpower the engine under any conditions, and that
the various reports of cars accelerating out of control while the driver
pressed on the brake pedal are simply not physically possible. I cannot
think of many cars currently being built where the same is not true.
Just thought you might be interested in the history of this debate.
