Oxygen Sensor

I have a '94 325i. The check engine light is on and the DME code
indicates that it is the EGO sensor #1. I'm assuming that the EGO is
the Oxygen sensor. Does this mean that it has gone bad and needs to
be replaced or could it mean something else? And if I replace it,
will the "check engine" light go out or does it have to be reset? TIA
for any comments.
Chris
