What are they good for?

One of the small "mud flaps" in front of the rear wheels is cracked.
What do these things do? If I take them off what will happen? (Will
acceleration and top speed dramatically increase due to less air
resistance thus making my 318 as fast as the new M5? Could this be the
greatest speed mod since electric superchargers?)
