short shift question

When shifting, I usually put light pressure on the shift knob and wait for the 
sychros to mesh. The car then slides gently into gear.  When I down shift, I 
generally double clutch, so its the same.

So, if I'm not jamming the car into gear, a short shifter does nothing to 
increase my shift speed?  Correct?

So tell me again why I want one.  Is it simply a matter of driving pleasure?
