E39 M5 - Static Impressions

The main BMW dealer in Bonn had a preview of the new M5 last week. BMW
M lent them an M5 for showroom use only, they are expecting their first
test drive model soon though.

This particular example was fully kitted out. GPS navigation system,
parking control, auto dimming mirror, xenon lights, DSP, handsfree phone
etc, illuminated shifter -- no clue though as to whether these are
standard equipment or options for the European market. Car was equipped
with 6-speed manual transmission. Side-folding mirrors go up and in, a
very neat trick for European parking habits.

Interior is superb...dash has a leather-like cover (hopefully will wear
well in warmer climes) and the rest of the leather covered surfaces
seemed to be of a much superior "blend" than the normal BMW product. As
has been the case with M cars sold in Europe, the fuel economy gauge is
replaced with an oil temp gauge.

Nitpick: The engine compartment is a bit dissapointing...gone are the
days of shiny metal parts, throttle bodies etc.

Chrome wheels (standard) look much better than in photos, while the rear
aspect (with small lip spoiler on top of trunk and four exhaust tips)
looks superb. The M5 was parked just ahead of a Euro-spec M Coupe...so
if you stepped back slightly you really had a great view of those two
derrieres! BTW: the engine in the Euro-spec M Coupe (or M3 for that
matter) is far more "M" looking than the new M5. Its too bad that
they've gone to something generic looking like that.

Incidentally, BMW AG's '99 calenadar is a must-have. Each month
features the cockpit of a classic BMW car from an F1 racer to the
Isetta.
