What's done for snow prep?

What do you guys do to make your car handle it's best in the snow and ice?
(other than snow/ice driving school).  I drive a '85 535i with Firestone
studded WinterTrax 195/70x14's.  I'm thinking of adding 140 to 210 lbs of tube
sand to the trunk.

Do you accelerate from a stop in 2nd gear a lot?

Any info would be helpful here in Colorado.  Thanks in advance.
