<e36> Curious black boxes

Hi all,

Whilst 'digging around' under the bonnet of my E36 325i (93) I noticed a
small thin black box with four or five brown wires coming out of it fixed
behind the left hand headlight on the inner wing. Does anybody know what it
is or what it does? My manual makes no mention of it.
