When does the "s" stand for "sport"?

Rob asks:

Also, I have been assuming for some time

CSi = Coupe, Sport, Fuel Injected, you are correct. T
he last two numbers are supposed to be indicative of the displacement,
however are not always so. Witness the 323i (with a 2.5L engine),
325e (with a 2.7L engine), 318i(s) (newer models, with a 1.9L engine).
However, these numbers are generally close enough to true
displacement...

Why does BMW do this? Hey, it's their car, they can name it whatever
they want!

Hope this helps.
