questions about early 90s 5 and 7 series

We're looking to buy a used 5 or 7 series, 91-95 timeframe. 

(my wife has been driving a Grand Cherokee the past few years, and after
doing the BMW Ultimate Driving Event here in Houston a few weeks ago, and
then a Porsche Club driving school two weekends ago, she's decided she wants
something... faster)

In any case, the prices for used 5s and 7s from the early 90s are in the
high teens to low twenties...

Two questions:

1) why are the 7 series cars priced about the same as the 5 series from
those years? Are there any 'issues' with these cars causing the
depreciation?

2) any points to pay special attention to for either of these series?
