E28 Power antanna woes

I'd like to tap the collective wisdom of the digest for an answer to my
power antenna woes.

Up until  recently, the power antenna on my '88 535i has had a mind of
it's own, and has been going up and down of it's own volition when the
radio is on. Unfortunately now it is stuck in the down position, and I
am unable to remove the mast or the power unit. Does any body have any
idea how to remove the antenna mast or the whole unit if it is stuck in
the retracted position?
