e30 'PPPP' on trip computer

Question to those e30 pros:

I've got a situation that I had to jump my friend's 1987 325is.  Soon
after I noticed that the trip computer started displaying 'PPPP' for
several of the options.  I've tried resetting it with no success.  The
owners manual mentions bringing the car to the dealership...do I HAVE
to?

Any help will be appreciated,
