Best mode to drive an 525iA

I am relatively new to driving an automatic BMW (and really not enjoying it),
but I wanted to know the best way to drive this.  I do not have the owners
manual to refer to so I thought I'd ask here.  It has the "A/M" switch next to
the selector lever (can't call it a shifter).  What do these mean? Where
should I have it placed?  I do have a Jim C chip in the car too....Looking for
best performance...Thanks, John
