DO use powdered Water Softener from the grocery store in your HOT water wash
AND rinse cycles when washing your car towels. Do NOT use fabric softeners!!.
They contain silicones that will scratch the hell out of your cars finish!.
They stay in the cotton towel.

The best towels are very old, almost rotting Bath Towels that have had the
"end ribbing" cut off, are washed with liquid detergent and powdered water
softener in wash & rinse cycles, on hot water. Be sure to dry towel in dryer
using NO softener 
"sheets".

If you're towels are, say, 80% cotton and 20% polyester, (or worse 30-60%
polyester) you are going to destroy your cars finish. Only 100% cotton towels,
and remove the sticker.
