Octane Advice

I'm a new owner of a '91 325, looking for clarification on octane
requirements. As I read the manual, minimum is either 87 or 91, depending
on the rating system, A FAQ somewhere explained the difference, implying
the min. is really the 87 Octane. My dealer, however, advises 91 for the
detergent content.

What's really required? What is really best for the engine?
