You would be amazed; properly done the clutchless
manual gearbox can shift faster than anyone save a
professional racer.
The sequential, cluthless gearbox in the Ferrari
F355/F1 disengages one gear & reengages the next
in 0.2 seconds. Try that with your shortshifter.
Shifts are done with gas pedal on the floor, and
you can drive along all day at the redline if you
like; it won't automatically upshift.
I haven't seen stats on the SMG, but the F355/F1
can accelerate (0-60, 0-100, quarter, etc.) faster
than the same car with the traditional 5-speed and
clutch (despite slightly higher weight), unless
the driver is willing to risk the
hideously-expensive transmission by shifting very
fast.
BTW I believe Saab had a clutchless manual years
ago but it didn't work too well.
