E34 HVAC Fan Resistor

Hello all,
I know this has been covered before.  I tried to change the resistor for
my 1990 535i by taking off the carpet above the go-fast pedal. 
Unfortunately, I could see no opening in which to feel around for the
resistor.  I proceeded to take out the radio/HVAC system but could see
anything resembling the resistor in question.
Could someone please email me more exacting directions.  Being a newbie
at this, I may need more help than the average Joe.
