Short shifters. Why?

Hi,

So why are people making their shifts shorter? I mean, if you work in a
factory I can perfectly understand this (huh), but what's the purpose in
cars? Is this in the same domain as aluminum pedal covers and brass shift
knobs or is there really something to it? Like, inertia of your arm doing a
long shift slowing down the gear transition. Or something?
