e28 clunk noise

I have an 87 528e. The rear end of my car seems to clunk on the driver's
side when I normally back up.  It feels like if I hit a parking cement
stopper but then just keep going.  I looked under the car recently and see
that the diff.l has to rods coming out covered with a rubber boot where it
connects to the diff.. Around the boot toward the driver side, it seems
like it got wet(maybe it leaked) but now is dry.

Any help would be appreciated.
