Winter Driving Setup for 540i Sport??

Question...

Has anyone found the best solution for setting up a '98 540i with the 6 speed 
Sport Package option (17" BMW alloys) for driving in the snow? Specifically, 
driving in the Lake Tahoe region (mountains, "Chains Required" Law, etc.)? 
Chains or cables or ?? Which brand, where you got them, about how much it cost, 
etc.

I'm asking this for a friend's car...
