Thanks for your reply(ies). I believe we are in agreement, for the most
part. Safety is the primary issue here. A signal alone does not denote a
safe pass. My example of a "late signal" merely indicates that the passing
car should not depend on the other driver to alter their driving style
(other than lifting) in order to facilitate a pass. A signal simply
acknowledges the fact that the "leading" car is aware of your intention to
pass. Again, I think the ultimate responsibility falls on the shoulders of
the "passer" and their "read" on the situation. Another example comes from a
recent experience at one the Pocono circuits. One of the passing zones was a
dog-leg straightaway whereby different drivers took different lines through
the dog-leg. While I agree that this zone was not readily conducive to
passing, I found it quite unnerving to see A-group students pulling
unexpectedly off their line in order to allow a faster car to pass.
