1989 <E34> 535i main beam question

I have noticed recently that while driving at night, my main beams will c=
ut
off for about 30 seconds at varying intervals.   This is alarming, even
when the fogs are on.  Turning the switch on and off of both the fogs and=

the mains has no effect. Neither does flicking the highs .  I would like =
to
pinpoint the problem without taking it to the shop.  All my connections a=
re
tight.  Is this a typical problem with this car?
