E34 Thumping Suspension Noise at Low Speed

I have a late '95 530 with 31k miles.  At low speeds when encountering
rough road or entering/exiting driveway skirt for example, there is a
hollow metalic thump.  Sometimes quite loud. More on drivers side but
also passenger.  There are no noises at speed.   The dealer first
tightened the strut but had no apparent affect.  He says all frontend
components are "in spec, some just barely".  Any insight or advice for
further testing?  -Mark.
