<wob> I need a new ride, any ideas

fellow cyber people:

I've had my '87 535isA for two years now. It's a very nice car, for
246,000 miles. But, there always seems to be a car 'to-do' list. I'm
tired of this.

I've decided 'new' is for me. However a 'new' bmw is a little out of
my $ range. [I don't want a car payment]

I'm getting a gift of $10K towards a 'new'car. Along with my (paid 4)
535 and a few thousand spare I have, I can come up with about $18K US.

So far my list includes: VW Jetta(tdi?), and Ford Contour SE (v6/5sp).
I have driven neither car and hope to soon.

My plan is to get 'on top' of car payments; in a year or so 'trade up'
with my traadein & cash (hopefully to an e46 ;-)

Any thought? Anyone? Anyone?
