FYIW, I recently used Carfax to do a title search on an E28. The model
information returned from their database was "Model: 535is/535i". The
subject vehicle was "is" badged, and appeared to be just that.

A check of the FAQ (http://www.eskimo.com/~dalus/bmw/ftp/bmw/FAQ.1)
seems to be consistent:
