Fellow enthusiasts,
just heard on the radio that a European consumer group published the results
of extensive safety test of several larger cars. The 5 series was one of 3
rated 'good', along with the Saab 9 5 and Toyota Camry. It was noted however
that the 5 had a problem with the airbag, inflating not early enough. A
problem that has since been corrected by BMW. Or so the source said. The
Merc (left front wheel protruding into driver's legroom) and Audi were not
as good.
These tests are mainly done to force car manufacturers to comply with the EU
2003 safety standards sooner. It is said that carmakers are dragging their
feet in this respect.
