<E36 M3> What is that thing?

Hi,

I have a 95 M3 and was looking at a 97 M3 a few days ago and was looking
under the hood and wondered what this thing is.  On the 96+ M3 there is
a round canister like device on the passenger side of the engine in bay
in the battery tray.  It had a long plastic tube with some sort of
baffle at the end and another tube that ran to the side of the engine
where several tubes ran in near the exhaust manifold.  Can someone
explain to me what this device is.
