RE: <e30> another timing belt problem

After replacing my timing belt I had an enormous squeal that changed
with RPM. I first thought it was one of the V-belts, so I tighted them
all up and the squeal wouldn't go away. Anyway to make a long story
short, I took the upper timing belt cover off and you could see scrape
marks on it where the tensioner pulley was rubbing against it.

Here's what I had done wrong. The lower cover and upper cover overlap
at the bolt that holds the pulley in place. The upper cover is supposed
to be on top of the lower cover. I had the upper cover underneath the
lower cover causing it to hit the pulley and rub.

Fortunately I had only driven it around the block and stopped because of
the noise, so not much damage had been done.

Subject: <e30> another timing belt problem

I received the following email from someone who has a timing belt
problem. I have forwarded him a copy of GregM2002's post from
yesterday. Does anyone have other ideas besides a bent pulley?
Please respond to myself or the digest and I'll forward on to
Stephen.

thanks
Dale
