E36 320i Coupe - Front shocks life expectancy?

Hi,

Does anyone know the life expectancy of front shocks.  My 1994 car has
covered 94,000 miles, it seems to handles and hug the road just fine,
but the garage says they are a bit soft.  Should gas inserts need
changing after only 4 years?
