The one number I have is BMW 800-831-1117. They should be able to tell
you at least the in-service date and other warranty related info,
possibly more.

There is also a service on the internet called Carfax. They look up
the VIN in public DMV records of many states and return you a report.
It can include info such as everywhere the car was registered, if the
car was ever totalled, if the mileage was rolled back, and other
interesting stuff. I got one of their reports recently when I bought a
used 325is for my wife. I think the cost was about $20.
