<E36> HELP!!! Front End Gremlins -Must Kill

The Car: 1993 325i 4-door Auto 61k mi.
The Problem: Mild clunk noise when applying brakes lightly. Happens
going forward and reverse. Much like a loose right caliper. No noise on
up and down movement or panic stop.

Attempts to fix:

1. Replaced both control arms with new OEM BMW units with new ball joints
and also replaced control arm bushings. Noise still exists

2. Suspected sway bar bushings. Removed sway bar completely. Noise still
exists.

3. Removed and inspected brake calipers, including floating bolts. All
looks good. Noise still exists

4. Raised front end of the car and tried to reproduce the noise. Moving
the tires side to side (not up and down) reproduced the noise. It seems
like there is a 1/4-1/8 inch play in the steering gear assembly, but I
don't think this would make the noise. Other suspect, loose wheel
bearings. Makes no other noise though.

Right now I'm about to pull my hair out or strangle my wife (keep saying,
why don't we just take it to the dealer? ARGGGGG!). I think it could be a
loose bearing. Does anyone have a writeup of serviceing the bearings?
Any other clues as to what it might be?

All help is greatly appreciated.

Dan
