<E34> Windshield replacement

A friend's 4-year old was playing in the front seat of my 525 in the
driveway and managed to jump up and bang his head on the inside of the
windshield. He's quite fine (neither a bruise nor a whimper) but now
I've got a 10" star on the passenger side of the windshield. 

So, any recommendations or 'need to know' items on getting a
replacement windshield? 

Also, any idea why the windshield fractured so easily from an inside
hit that does not appear to have been very hard?
