Peter,

Look for the easy answer first.  Make certain the rubber hose 
that connects the airflow meter to the throttle body is securely 
fastened.  If air bypasses the airflow meter the engine will run 
poorly or not at all.  

I've experienced the above problem when I left a hose clamp 
loose on the rubber intake hose.  The hose would seal sometimes 
while other times it would leak.  The engine suffered from the 
same symptoms you described; stalling, not starting, etc.
