RE: <E30> Clear plastic hose

Jeff,
That plastic hose in (the trunk of ) your E30 is a vent hose for the BATTERY!
Since lead-acid batteries give off hydrogen gas when charging and since the
trunk, for all intents and purposes is a sealed space, hydrogen can
accumulate. BTW, you DO have a battery with a vent tube, don't you? In any
case - DO NOT smoke when opening your trunk! Go to Sears for a Diehard
(about $100) or an Interstate battery dealer ($80) for a battery with a vent
tube. Then hook up the vent tube to the vent port on the battery. Oh,
ensure the vent tube is connected to the fume collector box (a plastic boxy
thingamajig under the battery tray). This thingamajig vents the hydrogen gas
to the outside.
HTH, but YMMV
