<02> Heater in 1600

Just because there haven't been enough 02 queries lately, I'm posting this 
(which I will now get around to fixing).

My heater doesn't work, where should I start and what are the common faults 
?

I noticed that there is one hose at the back of the engine (I can't remember 
if it's off the intake manifold or the block) that is kinked - but shouldn't 
be completely blocked.

Also, the controls in the dash are not marked and the two sliding controls 
feel really stiff.  I assume one is hot/cold, what's the other do?
