E-36 Fuel Gauge Problem

Is it true that certain E-36's are know to have a certain glitch in the 
program for the Fuel Gauge?

I was told by my friend who has a E-36 325is. When he filled up from an 
empty tank of gas, with the ignition on the second "on" position, and 
the driver's side door open, when you start the car, the fuel gauge 
position no longer moves to the correct position. He told me this 
occured twice to him, and he had to have the gauge reset by the dealer. 
I haven't tried this, because if its true I wouldn't want to be in that 
situation.
