E36 M3 transmission (man.) oil

Dear Digest members,

To prepare my car for the winter I would like to know what kind of 
transmission oil you use on your cars. The users manual tells to use 
ATF-oil. I assume this means automatic transmission fluid. What is 
the reason of using ATF-oil in a manual transmission? What is 
the viscosity of ATF-oil compared to synthetic transmission oil? In 
could climate I am used to using synthetic oil. Does anybody have an 
idea of what kind of synthetic oil can be used and where to get it? 
Anybody using synthetic oil?

For the differential the manual recommends specific BMW approved 
synthetic oil. I remember somebody saying earlier that this is some 
special oil only sold by the BMW service. Is that true?
