E28 Rough Idle

I have asked this question before without much response so I thought I'd try 
again.

My (1985) E28 528i (Australian) has a very rough idle when cold. Initially, 
the problem was worst imediately after starting = the dealer adjusted the 
mixture (and claimed that the only other thing that would fix it would be to 
replace the air-flow meter) and now it is
a little rough immediately after starting, but gets worse when idling after 
driving for a couple of minutes. When the car is fully warm the idle seems 
to be reasonably smooth.
