Metric Mechanic Short-Shift Kit

Hi everyone.  Looking for some advice on my E28 MM short-shift kit 
installation.  I bought the kit from BMP and am halfway thru the 
installaion.  Following is an excerpt from the instructions:

	Before installing the complete shifter into position, the 
original selector rod and coupling will have to be detached from the 
transmission.  This is done by prying the spring sleeve off of the 
coupling onto the transmission rod with a thin blade screwdriver.  Next, 
push or tap the cylindrical pin out of the coupling and pull the 
coupling and horizontal selector rod together off the transmission rod.

How do I reach the spring sleeve and cylindrical pin which are above 
where the drive shaft joins the transmission?  I hope you don't tell me 
I'll have to drop the shaft and transmission down.  This will also 
require the removal of the exhaust system and heat shield from the looks 
of things.

Any help will be greatly appreciated as my car is undrivable as it sits.
