The use of DEXRON 3 does not automatically imply a lack of transmission
durability. Just because it is a thinner oil does not mean it does not have
sufficient film strength to support the loads. If the box is designed to use
it, it will probably last out its design life. If it is not designed to use
the oil, well, all bets are off at that point.
I know that many FWD cars have been using ATF for many years without problem.
The thinner oil improves shifting feel and lowers fuel consumption. Again, if
it was designed to use it, I don't think it has any cons that you can correct
by using a thicker 75w-90 oil...
