E30 cruise control

My 1988 325is cruise control is busted. When the car was in for the
timing belt replacement (why a belt and not a chain?) the dealer's
service department looked at the CC to give me an estimate. They said
"I dunno" to the problem and said that replacing the brain might fix
it. Is there anything else it might be, that BMW mechanics would miss?
If I managed to get a new brain, is it a unplg/plugin replacement? I
don't know CC's but I do know vacum hoses are involved. Is it hard to
get it back to a state of vacum? Any info/pointers would be most
appreciated.
