The BMW remote keyless-entry/alarm system has a microphone built in to
detect the sound of glass breakage. When I initially installed this
system in my MY 1996 328i, I got many false alarms, all attributed to
the glass-breakage sensor (the system identifies the source of the alarm
condition when you deactivate it). The parking lot at work is quite
noisy, and apparently it was enough to trigger the alarm.
There is a switch assembly inside of the module that adjusts the
sensitivity of the microphone. It was shipped by the factory set to the
highest level of sensitivity, Since I have reduced the sensitivity, I
have had no more false alarms.
