Here is a short list of what I have seen as far as lighter sockets..

1990 BMW 325i - stays on
1997 F150 4X4 - stays on
1987 Mustang GT - stays on
1988 Cherokee - goes off

it depends on the manufacturer. Personally, I like them to stay on, but if you
want it to switch off, then you would have to rewire it to get its power from
after the ignition (accessory position) switch.
