Bob, The door panel glue coming unstuck is a fairly common problem on 89-92 525/535s, especially on cars with the darker interior. Unfortunately, BMW and most dealers play dumb if the car is out of warranty and are more than happy to offer replacement for ~$500 a side (as you found out!). I have yet to find a solution.
