M3 shifting problems

I am concerned about the problem with the MISSHIFT.  I have a 96 M3 that
is at the dealership now for the 1200 mile checkup.  One of the problems
I'm having is a "thunk" sound when shifting which the service dept says
is a linkage problem.  Now I read about the problem with shifting into
1st by misstake instead of 3rd. Does anyone know about the supposed fix
for this and what are the production dates which have the problem.
