Where's the chrome?

On '89 (& probably later) E34s the bright trim on the interior window sills
(top of door bolsters) was covered from the factory with some kind of
"protective" film. This stuff scratches and dulls easily because it is much
softer than the substrate it is supposed to protect. Does anyone know how
to remove this stuff? It's too thin to peel off, lacquer thinner has no
effect on it, polish simply dulls it.

This was the same year that BMW really hosed their engine bays with
cosmolene. They must have been on a protection kick.

Also, any suggestions for a polish for the exterior bright trim around the
windows? I think it's polished aluminum, not chrome.
