  Loose shifters on many year-model BMW's are the result of soft bushings
within the shift platform mounts.  Occasionally the shift platform may
fracture leaving the mount in mid-air= real loose shifter.
  Shift platform mounts are available from the dealer, and on the after-market.
Different mounts are necessary for different models.
