It means that the computer ECU detected something wrong. You didn't say what
year it was, but earlier E30's (like up through 1988 or so) should flash a code
when you turn the key on (but don't start it) on the check engine light. Newer
E30's (1989 - 1991) require you to depress the gas pedal fully to the floor then
release it five times in succession. It will then flash a code on the light. See
