My 1989 535 does it all the time and my 1995 M3 does it intermittently;
thought it might be computer glitch but dealer
said it is common problem,NOT due to OBC failure. He removed each
brake light bulb & cleaned the contacts--that did it! Bending the
socket contacts inward to tighten the grip is also helpful.
Apparently the sensing circuit is very sensitive to resistance
differential. Don't forget the 3rd brake light!
