Rough Idle Nuisance Turns Problem

I have had this rough idle problem on my 1982 320i for a while
now. I should say I decided to not replace the O2 regulator
since the consensus here was that it wouldn't help. I have
cheched for vacuum leaks and haven't found any. The injectors
aren't clogged and the air filter is new. In time, I learned
to live with the intermittent idling.

However, the car started making backfire-like noices recently.
The engine dies if I come to a sudden stop. It can barely
keep running at idle. The oil is fresh. Over and above,
say, 1050 RPM's the engine runs peppy and smooth. It also
runs cool during warm-up (about 3-5 minutes in the summer
heat). It's when it reaches normal operating temp. that the
idle starts to act up (is this a major hint or what?).

I haven't messed with the ignition system other than the new
Bosche plugs I threw in. The distr. rotor looks fine and
the wire harness pretty fresh. However, the alternator
bushings are worn causing the belt to 'vibrate'somewhat.
I am now ready to start messing with the idle speed/mixture
adjustments but I have no gas analyzer. Any suggestions?
Tips, please?
