Engine Cleaning

Hi folks.  I have an '87 535is in need of an engine/engine bay degrease and 
general cleaning.  I intend to work on the engine a good bit during ownership 
and also just want to have a clean engine bay.  Are the auto store products 
like "Gunk" or the like good products for doing this or should I locate a 
detail shop for this process?  If I do it myself what precautions are 
strongly suggested?  If I have someone else do it what is the best method:  
pressure wash with degreaser or steam clean with same?  Thanks for any help 
as I'm tired of filthy hands from 9 year old dirt and grease.
